When do I need a Power of Attorney?
The Importance of a Power of Attorney
The power of attorney is a legal instrument which authorizes one person, called an “agent” or “attorney-in-fact,” to act on behalf of another person, called the “principal.” This document can be important if you are going out of town for an extended period of time or planning a medical procedure that may require significant recovery time. Usually, we can rely on a relative or close friend to handle this kind of responsiblity. The person designated to be the agent is obligated to act in the principal’s best interest and make certain decisions on behalf of the principal.
